How to do a Stamped Overlay

A stamped overlay is a finish that has been embossed with concrete stamps or texture skins to produce different patterns and textures. A stamped overlay is one of the more advanced applications. It has the most authentic look when done correctly. Let’s get into the best way to get that authentic look.

Starting off with a properly prepared concrete surface is important. Once the substrate is ready you will start the application by applying two coats of our concrete bonding agent named Nano Bond. This soaks down into the pores and creates a permanent mechanical and chemical bond.

As soon as the second coat of Nano Bond is dry you will apply a layer of TruHybrid Multi-Mix. This is our polymer, modified cement overlay. The thickness will depend on the depth of the stamping tools.

This layer is applied with a gauge rake. This tool has cams on the ends of a blade that applies the material at the desired thickness that usually ranges from 3/16 of an inch to ½ inch thick.

As soon as you have screeded TruHybrid with the gauge rake, you will smooth the surface with a magic trowel to remove an surface imperfections. Then it is time to wait until the material has begun to set.

This is the most critical part of the stamped overlay. Timing is everything. There is a way to test which is by placing the palm of your hand on the surface and applying pressure. When you can apply slight pressure without the material sticking to your hand; it is time to stamp.

You need to apply a bond breaker to the concrete stamps and surface of TruHybrid to keep the two from sticking together. No Stick is our concrete release agent. Apply to both surfaces by spraying just enough to create a sheen.

Lay your concrete stamp or texture skin on the surface and step onto it. You will lightly walk around flat footed to press the texture into the TruHybrid. As it starts to set you will apply more pressure to get the texture pressed in. If you start with the material a little wet you can just use your hands to press in the texture with the stamps.

Continue this process over the whole stamped overlay surface until all has been textured. Check for imperfections during the process. It is easier to fix these areas sooner than later even though they can be fixed at any time.

After the No Stick concrete release agent has dried it is time to antique the surface with color and stain. You will do this by applying a coat of Infused concrete stain and Color Shade universal colorant. Simply spray this on the surface to accent all of the veins and clefts in the texture. This is what gives the staped overlay its authentic look.

Once this coat is dry you will apply two coats of our sealer to preserve and protect your stamped overlay for years to come.

The options with a stamped overlay are endless. You can use patterned concrete stamps or seamless texture mats or skins. You can use a tool to hand carve in grout lines to customize your project base on size and design choice.

As always we suggest creating a custom sample for your clients so they understand what they are getting. Educating them makes the process much easier.
